From Training to Impact: Developing Media and Communication Skills among Specialized Scholarship Participants

As part of a training pathway that combines knowledge, practical application, and evaluation, participants in specialized scholarships in media and public relations continue to develop their skills in institutional communication, media engagement, and crafting impactful messages, strengthening their readiness to contribute effectively to the media and development sectors.

The training pathway is part of the New Horizon Leaders (NHL) Program, funded by Al-Awn Foundation for Development and implemented by HLDYC Foundation, in partnership with specialized training institutions, including the Al Jazeera Media Institute in Qatar.

During the Media Appearance training, participants moved beyond learning media concepts to applying them in practical settings. They practiced conducting interviews, press conferences, and television dialogues, while developing their ability to work confidently in front of the camera and communicate messages with clarity and professionalism.

The “Let’s Think Out Loud” workshop complemented this experience by focusing on persuasion and influence, audience understanding, and the development of effective communication messages. It helped participants recognize communication not simply as a means of delivering information, but as a tool for building relationships and creating meaningful impact.

To further strengthen the value of the training experience, an evaluation workshop was conducted to review the outcomes of previous sessions, reflect on the knowledge and skills gained, and connect them with practical needs in media and public relations, particularly within development institutions.

This pathway reflects an approach that goes beyond traditional training focused on knowledge transfer toward building practical, applicable capacities. The impact extends beyond developing media appearance or message-production skills to include understanding audiences, communicating with confidence, managing dialogue, and strengthening the media presence of institutions.

Through this investment in young people’s capacities, specialized scholarships contribute to developing professionals who can use media and communication tools to support their institutions, build effective relationships, and communicate development messages with greater clarity and impact.
